Mazzy Star is an American alternative rock band that was formed in 1988, in Santa Monica, California from the now-defunct band called Opal. The band rose to prominence with the release of their track titled Fade into You from their second studio album So Tonight That I Might See (1993).

  • She Hangs Brightly was Mazzy Star’s debut studio album that was released on May 21, 1990.
  • Their second studio album titled So Tonight That I Might See which was released on October 5, 1993, was ranked at #36 on the Billboard 200 and until late 2021, had been their only Platinum and Gold selling albums.
  • Seasons of Your Day was their 4th and final album until early December 2021, which was released on September 24, 2013, and ranked highest on the UK Albums Chart at #24.

  1. It was vocalist Hope Sandoval and guitarist David Roback that formed Mazzy Star after the departure of vocalist Kendra Smith from their former group called Opal.
  2. The band’s musical influences are The Rolling Stones, X (Pop Band From The 70’s), The Velvet Underground, The Bangles, Nirvana, Cigarettes After S*x, Lana del Rey, Angel Olsen, and Big Star.
  3. Some of their hit singles until 2021, were Fade into You, Flowers in December, Common Burn / Lay Myself Down, and I’m Less Here.
  4. Mazzy Star’s founding member David Roback died on February 24, 2020, at the age of 61 in Los Angeles, California due to metastatic cancer.
