She posted a quote by poet Maryam Hasnaa, which read: ‘At this point on my path I’d preferred be misunderstood and rejected for honouring myself than adored for playing along to a false version someone created of me.’
Ashley said she’d shared the words because ‘they speak to the deeply layered process I’ve been unraveling for what feels like many many years’.
She went on to explain she felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility to support others, based on her family’s values.
‘It feels more painful dishonouring myself than trying to please everyone else. This was something I grew up being praised and loved for, and what a beautiful attribute, one that my mother so beautifully engrained in me,’ she wrote.
‘”As Harts, our purpose is to always love and give to everyone unconditionally.”‘

‘I’m not saying this isn’t “right” yet with my younger understanding of it, I attempted to live up to those standards by being there for everyone,’ she continued.
‘I’ve been entangled in my own confusion for so long, feeling guilty for resisting all the people I love most in my life and quietly making them wrong for wanting so much from me. And in my attempts of saying “no”, my time alone has often had an undercurrent of depression, to the point of paralysing “I’m not enough-ness”.’
She went on to post a picture of her new hair on Instagram Stories, and described the transformation as her ‘latest self discovery’.

Ashley added that her change in hair colour manifested physically the emotional change she had embraced in her life.
‘This dark hair and move to Texas are parts of it, although they are external changes, they are representing and holding me in this integration,’ she said.
