When Daunte was stopped by the police asking for his vehicle’s papers, Daunte had called his mother asking for help.
In the middle of the mother-son conversation, police had interfered and asked Daunte to get out of the car.

Daunte was shot a few moments after being pulled out of his vehicle.
His mother, Katie, had reached the incident spot sometime later; thus, she also played as a key witness of the case.
To the surprise, Daunte’s after is an African-American man while Katie is a white woman.
The case of Daunte’s shooting caused national uproar given Potter’s race as a white policewoman and Daunte’s background as a Black male.
