A single-mother-of-one wept in court as she was banned from the roads for a year after being caught driving her Audi A3 six points over the drink-drive limit.

Businesswoman Jordan Knight, 36, was pulled over and breathalysed outside a restaurant after she was earlier spotted driving erratically on the M56 motorway in Cheshire.

Tests showed she had 41 micrograms of alcohol in 100 mililitres of breath.

The legal limit in England is 35mg but police will only charge motorists whose breath test readings are 40mg and over – making Knight just 2mg over the limit in real terms.

Knight, who lives at a farmhouse in the remote village of Shocklach near Malpas, wept at Warrington Magistrates Court as she feared her automatic driving ban would leave her stranded at home and unable to run her solo-run cleaning business which services rural homes and livery stables.

The defendant, who lives in a tiny farming hamlet, faced isolation and told the court she worried how she’d get her daughter to school without her car as there is ‘no public transport’.

‘It has taken me three years to get to where I am now,’ she said. ‘I am a single parent with a seven-year-old little girl who attends the village school and I live in the middle of nowhere.

‘We do not have any public transport at all. No buses, no trains, nothing. We do not even have a shop.

‘If I was to walk my daughter to school I would have to go down lots of windy country lanes. There are no pavements or street lights and I am just a bit worried for my daughter’s safety and in winter it’s going to be dark.

‘I drive from house to house to clean, as well as to liveries and things like that and these places are also very rural. I would not be able to get any public transport to the houses to clean so I would not be able to work.

The single mother-of-one worried about how she would get her daughter to school without a car as they live in ‘the middle of nowhere’

‘I don’t know how I will go about looking for another job because there’s no public transport where I live.’

After being asked by magistrates if anybody could help take her daughter to school, she said ‘I don’t know, I will have to ask.’

The incident occurred at 8.30pm on October 8 this year when Knight was seen driving on the M56 Eastbound between Junction 11 and 10 at Warrington.

Prosecutor Rachel Bennion said: ‘The officers saw her Audi A3 which was described as lane hugging and swerving in its lane. It came to a stop of its own accord outside the Stretton Fox, Warrington.

‘The officers found the defendant in the driver’s seat. She smelt of intoxicants and her speech appeared to be slurred.

‘A roadside breath test was conducted which found the presence of alcohol. The defendant was transported to custody where the drink drive procedure was undertaken.

‘She provided a reading of 41 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath. There was no interview. She has no previous convictions and this is a low reading.

‘It is just within the lowest band of the guidelines but there was some evidence of bad driving in the description I have provided.’

Knight was banned from driving for 12 months and was fined £80 and ordered to pay a £92 victim surcharge.

‘We have to disqualify you today, we do not have an option,’ Chairwoman Dr Elaine Hemmings said.

‘But we do offer you the drink-drive awareness course. If you successfully complete that you can reduce the ban by three months.’
