Mujeeb Ur Rahman Facts

  1. He had first come into the spotlight in November 2017 when his ‘Player of the Tournament’ winning heroics had helped Afghanistan win the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup title for the first time in history. Before this edition, the tournament had been played 5 times and India had won it 4 times and had shared the trophy once with Pakistan. Mujeeb was the leading wicket-taker in the 2017 edition of the tournament with 20 scalps in just 5 matches at an unbelievable average of 5.55.
  2. His progress to the senior national team was fast-tracked after this. When he had made his senior international debut in December 2017, in an ODI match against Ireland, he had become the first male cricketer who was born in the 21st century to have played senior international cricket. He had made an immediate impression with a ‘Player of the Match’ performance on debut and his spell of 4/24 had helped Afghanistan hammer Ireland by 138 runs. These were the joint-best figures for an Afghan bowler on his ODI debut.
  3. About 2 months later, at the age of 16 years and 325 days, he had become the youngest player ever to have recorded a 5-wicket haul in an ODI match. His spell of 5/50 (10 overs) had helped Afghanistan bundle out Zimbabwe for just 134 runs and win the match by 10 wickets. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance.
  4. At the 2018 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup, he was the star in Afghanistan’s historic quarter-final win over New Zealand. He had recorded sensational bowling figures of 4/14 (8.1 overs) as Afghanistan had skittled out New Zealand for just 107 runs to win by a massive margin of 202 runs. This meant that Afghanistan had reached the semi-final stage of the tournament for the first time ever. They lost the semi-final match to Australia and had eventually finished in 4th place after their 3rd place playoff match against Pakistan was abandoned due to a wet outfield. Pakistan had been awarded 3rd place because they had finished ahead of Afghanistan in the group stage matches.
  5. At the 2018 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, he was Afghanistan’s best bowler in their opening group stage match against Scotland (2/47 in 10 overs), their 3rd group stage match against Hong Kong (3/26 in 10 overs), their opening ‘Super 6’ match against the West Indies (3/33 in 10 overs), and in the final against the West Indies (4/43 in 9.5 overs). Mujeeb had finished the tournament as the joint leading wicket-taker (17 wickets) as Afghanistan went on to win the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier for the first time in history and, thus, qualify for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
  6. In April 2018, at the age of 17 years and 11 days, representing Kings XI Punjab, he had become the then youngest cricketer to have played a match in the IPL.
  7. In June 2018, he was a member of the playing XI in Afghanistan’s first-ever test match, against India, in Bengaluru. This had made him just the 6th player in history, and the first for Afghanistan, to have made his first-class debut directly in a test match. He had become the first player born in the 21st century to have played a test match as well as the youngest player (17 years and 78 days) to feature in their country’s inaugural test match.
  8. Afghanistan’s inexperience showed in that match as India had crushed them by an innings and 262 runs inside 2 days. Mujeeb, like most of Afghanistan’s bowlers, was hammered by the Indian batsmen (75 runs in 15 overs at an economy rate of 5, for just 1 wicket). As of March 2022, he had not played another test match.
  9. In September 2018, he was selected by the Nangarhar Leopards for the inaugural edition of the Afghanistan Premier League. With 12 wickets in 9 matches, he was the team’s joint-leading wicket-taker.
  10. In December 2020, during the 2020–21 season of the Big Bash League season, he had recorded his first 5-wicket haul in T20 cricket. Although he was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance, his sensational spell of 5/15 (4 overs) was not enough to salvage a win for his team, the Brisbane Heat, which lost a mighty close match to the Hobart Hurricanes by just 1 run.
  11. He has also played for the Northern Superchargers (2021) in The Hundred, a professional franchise 100-ball cricket tournament that was introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as a new format of cricket that was played for the first time in July and August 2021.
  12. In October 2021, in Afghanistan’s opening match of the ICC World T20, against Scotland, he had recorded a spell of 5/20 (4 overs). This was his first 5-wicket haul in T20I matches and he was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance. Afghanistan went on to crush Scotland by 130 runs, the country’s largest victory margin in T20I matches.
