A murder probe has been launched after an OAP died following a street fight outside a Birmingham church.

Two men, aged 47 and 31, and a woman, 36, were being quizzed on suspicion of murder after an elderly man died during a brawl.

The 71-year-old is believed to have collapsed when a fracas erupted in the Bartley Green area of the city yesterday.

West Midlands Police detectives were today piecing together events in a bid to understand how the pensioner came to suffer a fatal cardiac arrest.

The 31-year-old man and the woman were also being questioned on suspicion of affray. A woman, 36, was also arrested. All three remain in custody.

Emergency services were called to reports of people fighting on Shenley Lane shortly after 12.30pm.

Paramedics tried their best to revive the victim, who was outside St Gabriel’s Church, but he was declared dead at the scene. His family have been informed.

Detective Inspector Ranjit Sangha, from Force CID, said: ‘We’ve a team of detectives working hard to understand what happened yesterday.

‘That includes who was involved, what roles they played and why they were fighting.

‘We know there was a fight and passersby seem to have tried to calm the situation down. If you were one of those people and haven’t yet spoken to us, please get in touch.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: We were called to reports of a medical emergency on Marston Road at 12.37pm yesterday. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the West Midlands Care Team were sent to the scene.

‘On arrival we discovered one patient, a man who was in a critical condition.

‘Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite their best efforts it became apparent nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.’
