The effectiveness of an expansive NHS service has been called into question by a Government watchdog.

The NHS Health Check, which was introduced under Labour in 2009, is set to be reviewed and the programme has been assessed on its ability to evaluate individuals for the development of deadly conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, or stroke, within the next decade.

The NHS Health Check offers everyone between the ages of 40 and 74 without a pre-existing condition, a health assessment at least once every five years.

However, some people, such as those who are already diagnosed with a heart condition, are excluded as they require more frequent monitoring.

The system has been criticised for failing to secure high rates of attendance from those invited to take the free check, calling into question its usefulness.

Gareth Davies, head of the National Audit Office, said of the system: “Each year thousands of lives are lost to cardiovascular disease, with billions of pounds spent tackling it. Health Checks can play a crucial role in bringing these numbers down, but the system isn’t working effectively.”

It’s claimed that not enough people are getting invites for health checks, and not all those who do receive invites actually attend their booking.

The NAO report into the system explains how it works: “Health professionals will tell the patient their level of risk, and depending on that risk, discuss options such as weight management.

“This could include referrals to local authorities or NHS services or individual behaviour changes, as well as clinical interventions such as medication to lower cholesterol.”

The NHS says if you think you are eligible but have not been invited, contact your GP surgery to find out if they offer NHS Health Checks or click HERE to find out where you can get an NHS Health Check in your area.
