An organised mum and creative stylist has revealed how and why you should be cleaning your Apple AirPods once a week if you want to avoid buildup of dirt, earwax and grime.

Liz Amaya, from Brisbane, said she regularly ‘reminds herself’ to go and clean her AirPods – as when you don’t it can interfere with the sound quality and overall function.

‘To clean your AirPods, you will need alcohol solution, Q tips or cotton buds, a toothpick and a microfibre cloth,’ Liz posted on Instagram.

‘They are earwax magnets, and you should clean them once a week to optimise the sound!’

To clean your AirPods, Liz said you should first of all remove them from their packaging and gather up the ingredients you’ll need.

First of all, spray some of the alcohol solution onto a cotton bud and ‘wipe the buds’ carefully.

‘Use a toothpick to reach the hard-to-reach spots,’ Liz said.

‘Then, wipe them down with a microfibre cloth.’

Once this is done, the mum recommends you repeat this process with the AirPods case and then put them face down to let everything dry out ‘completely’.

‘Optimise sound by always keeping them clean and do this once a week for the best results,’ Liz said.

‘This is so important but oftentimes neglected. Thanks for sharing,’ another added.

A third simply wrote: ‘Great idea and a good reminder too, thanks!’

The mum said towels should be washed after every three uses.

‘Towels absorb a lot of water and remain damp for hours, which is the perfect breeding ground for unwanted germs,’ Liz said.

Liz said hand towels should be washed daily while bath mats should be washed twice weekly.

‘Washcloths that you use to lather and scrub in the shower should air-dry and be washed after every use,’ she added.

How to clean your Apple AirPods

Don’t run your AirPods Max under water.

Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

If your AirPods Max are exposed to anything that might cause stains or other damage – for example, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, perfumes, solvents, detergent, acids or acidic foods, insect repellent, sunscreen, oil, or hair dye:

– Wipe them clean with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water and dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

– Do not attempt to use them until they’re completely dry.

– Make sure not to get any liquid in the openings.

– Don’t use sharp objects or abrasive materials to clean your AirPods Max.
