We reached out to Dr. Azza Halim, a leading board-certified multi-specialist physician for all the information you need to turn back time. If you’re over the age of 50, Dr. Halim has several recommendations to achieve a look of a 30 to 40-year-old.

First off, you can begin treatment for photodamage and skin tightening. A professional will evaluate your skin requirements and lifestyle, including menopausal or perimenopause changes you are experiencing. They will also determine your facial changes, skin laxity, and bone density that happen as you age from when you turned 45, Dr. Halim explains. These issues can be corrected with good nutrition, vigorous exercise, sunblock volume replenishing, and laser treatment.

Dr. Halim shares the best vitamins that will nurture younger, tighter-looking skin, telling us, “Vit[amins] A, C, E, anthocyanins, folic acid, and collagen all help support the building blocks we need for youthful skin. We start losing collagen in our 20s and 30s, unfortunately, therefore starting early with proper nutrition, exercise, skincare, and sun protection can help slow down the aging process and minimize lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.”

Don’t forget about your serums and eye creams if you want your skin to look a decade younger! Dr. Halim says, “For a general routine, then I suggest similar to above but also adding Vit[amin] C serum, hyaluronic acid serum (Alastin), followed by sunblock and an eye cream on top of the eye gel in [the] morning for de-puffing and moisturizing the delicate eye area.” She also recommends exfoliating one or two times each week.

“Nighttime routine includes removing makeup with an oil cleanser or micellar water first followed by the Zo Gentle Foam in order to thoroughly cleanse skin as many tend to wear heavier makeup with age. After cleansing, apply a hydrating serum [and] then moisturizer,” Dr. Halim advises.

She also recommends applying mild night retinol together with a moisturizer. Just be sure not to over-dry your skin, as Dr. Halim warns, “Mature skin tends to become more sensitive and drier over time.”

Additional steps that are beneficial are to wear less makeup, make sure to keep your skin hydrated, and apply a moisturizer-primer that’s tinted and has SPF. Zo Oclipse is a tinted moisturizer Dr. Halim recommends. Using this kind of product lets your skin “breathe and glow without looking heavy.”

Dr. Halim points out that when dealing with skin that’s mature, remember that “less is more.” Too much makeup or concealer will make lines and wrinkles more noticeable and look so much worse.
