There are some recognisable mitochondrial syndromes that have specific patterns and experts have been able to name them.

One that is part of a larger group of conditions known as mitochondrial DNA depletion disorders is Alpers’ syndrome.

This is caused by mistakes in the DNA of a gene known as POLG and can cause severe epilepsy, a loss of developmental skills and liver failure.
