  1. Reed used to sell vacuum cleaners door-to-door in his gap year before entering college.
  2. In the summer of 1981, he joined the United States Marine Corps (the maritime land force service branch of the United States Armed Forces) officer training program and spent his college summers there. He did not complete the training, though, and was never commissioned into the Marine Corps, instead choosing to pursue service in the Peace Corps.
  3. After graduating from Bowdoin College in 1983, until 1985, he taught mathematics at a high school in rural northwest Swaziland.
  4. After graduating from Stanford University, he joined a company called Adaptive Technology where he created a tool for debugging software. He left the organization in 1991 to start his first company, Pure Software, which made products to troubleshoot software.
  5. In 1997, he co-founded Netflix which offered customers in the United States a platform to order DVDs online. About a decade later, Netflix launched a service to stream movies and TV shows to computers.
  6. In April 2004, he authored an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal advocating the expensing of stock options, a method of accounting for the value of share options, distributed as incentives to employees, within the profit and loss reporting of a listed business.
  7. He became a director of Facebook, Inc. in June 2011. By September 2016, he reportedly owned more than USD 10 million worth of the company’s shares. In April 2019, it was announced that he would be leaving the board. He also served on the board of Microsoft Corporation from 2007 to 2012.
  8. In 2020, he and his wife donated USD 30 million to GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization), a public-private global health partnership that aims to increase access to immunization in poor countries, to support COVAX (COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access), a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
  9. In June 2020, he made the largest individual donation ever (USD 120 million) to support scholarships at HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).
  10. In September 2020, he co-authored a book on Netflix‘s culture and management principles that was titled No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention. It became a New York Times bestseller. It was also shortlisted for the ‘Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year’ award.
  11. In March 2022, he donated USD 1 million to Razom, a Ukrainian nonprofit organization, to help procure emergency supplies and medical equipment to treat the wounded in the Russia-Ukraine war.
