Rishi Sunak’s father, Yashvir Sunak, was born and raised in the colony and protectorate of Kenya. Usha, his mother, was born in Tanganyika, a formerly independent nation now part of Tanzania in the modern era.
Usha was a pharmacist who managed a neighborhood pharmacy, and Yashvir was a general practitioner who worked for the NHS. According to Mr. Sunak’s website, he grew up seeing how dedicatedly his parents served their community.
The MP’s maternal grandmother, Sraksha, married his maternal grandfather, Raghubir, in an arranged marriage when she was 16 years old, according to Lord Ashcroft in Going For Broke: The Rise of Rishi Sunak. Little is known about Mr. Sunak’s paternal grandparents.
After she met the railway engineer living and working in Tanzania but originally from Punjab, Suraksha, born in Tanzania, persuaded Raghubir to start a new life in Africa.
Usha, the mother of Mr. Sunak, and her two younger brothers were born into the marriage when Raghubir obtained employment as a tax official in Tanzania.
Sraksha allegedly sold all her bridal jewelry to pay for the family’s trip to the UK in 1966.
