Robin Roberts has revealed that her long-time partner Amber Laign has breast cancer – a decade after she had to receive a bone marrow transplant due to a rare condition and 15-years after she overcame her own battle with the disease.
The Good Morning America anchor, 61, announced on Thursday via a video shared to her social media accounts that she’ll have to step away from the morning show ‘from time to time,’ so that she could be by Amber’s side as she undergoes treatment.
She said that Amber – who was diagnosed with the illness at the end of last year – had surgery last month.
She has now started chemotherapy, and thankfully, Robin said Amber’s prognosis is ‘good.’

‘We’re so grateful to our family and friends who have known this and kept it private until Amber was ready to share it with others,’ she said in the video.

Robin has faced numerous health problems of her own over the years. She beat breast cancer in 2007, and five years later, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) – a disease in which the bone marrow does not make enough blood cells.
‘She and I have been together for almost 17 years, and have helped each other through our challenges, like my journey with cancer,’ continued Robin.
‘It’s my turn now to be there for her as she was for me. That means I’ll be away from GMA from time to time, like this morning, as she starts chemo.
‘We know many, many are facing cancer and other challenges – like my mama said, “Everybody’s got something.”
‘Please know that you are in our prayers and hopefully we’re in yours too. Blessings to all.’
Robin and Amber were introduced by mutual friends in 2005, after being set up on a blind date. And according to the talk show host, Amber had no idea who she was when they first met.
‘She rarely followed sports, so she never saw me on ESPN. Her office mates at the time watched a different morning show … Ouch,’ she previously wrote in her memoir, Everybody’s Got Something.
Robin and Amber kept their relationship private until 2013, when Robin shared a list of all the people she was thankful for, and included her ‘long time girlfriend, Amber’

Robin underwent several sessions of chemotherapy for her breast cancer, which she overcame in 2007.
She was then diagnosed with MDS – which can occur in response to cancer treatments or chemical exposure.
According to Medicinenet.com, a percentage of people with MDS can and will develop leukemia.

‘Oh, praise God I’m doing as well as I am. I am so incredibly grateful to the doctors, the nurses, the technicians who still to this day keep an eye on me,’ said Robin.
‘I do my due diligence. I go for my regular checkups. I have started meditating. I watch what I eat more so than I did before.
‘All those things that I need to do. But I want to be a symbol to people that this too shall pass.’
She added: ‘I don’t want to be a survivor. I don’t want to survive going through something like this, I want to thrive.’
