Rory Dames is an American soccer coach who most recently served as the head coach of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Chicago Red Stars.

A day before a report alleging verbal and emotional abuse of players, the coach of an NWSL soccer team resigns.

The Chicago Red Stars’ coach quit on Sunday, one day after leading his team to the NWSL title game and one day before a Washington Post piece claimed that players had accused him of verbal and emotional abuse.

Rory Dames’ resignation was revealed in a press release issued by the Red Stars on Sunday, after the team’s 2-1 loss against the Washington Spirit on Saturday. The claims were not mentioned in the statement.

The revelation in the Post on Monday is the latest episode in a saga that has engulfed the 10-team league, which has been chastised for its treatment of its players. According to the Washington Post, athletes sought aid from the US Soccer Federation rather than the NWSL on the alleged mistreatment.

Dames announced his resignation to spend more time with his family.

The Red Stars stated in a statement on Monday that they supported the players “who are courageously campaigning for change,” and that they were “dedicated to doing our part to create a safe atmosphere” for players, staff, volunteers, and fans.

Neither the squad nor the coach mentioned the claims when Dames’ resignation was announced.

“For 11 years, I have dedicated myself to helping build the Chicago Red Stars into one of the top international clubs,” Dames said in the team’s press release. “Effective today, I’m refocusing my attention to my family and future endeavors, and I am resigning as coach of the Chicago Red Stars.”
