On March 9, 2024, Georgia’s Atlanta City Council declared March 10 as RuPaul Day.
The holiday is a tribute to the MTV personality’s “contributions to the arts and LGBTQ+ rights.”
In a press release, the city council announced: “We proudly honor RuPaul, an icon whose influence transcends boundaries of culture, gender, and entertainment.
“With boundless creativity and unparalleled charisma, RuPaul has not only revolutionized the world of drag but has also become a beacon of empowerment and acceptance for countless individuals.
“His fearless advocacy for self-expression and authenticity has inspired millions to celebrate the beauty of diversity.
“We proclaim our gratitude for RuPaul’s contributions to the arts, to LGBTQ+ rights, and to the hearts of those who have found solace and strength in his message of love and acceptance.”
They added: “RuPaul’s trailblazing presence in entertainment, activism, and LGBTQ+ advocacy has reshaped industries and inspired countless individuals to embrace their authentic selves fearlessly.
“He has transcended boundaries while fostering a culture of self-love and acceptance.
“We celebrate RuPaul’s immeasurable contributions to the world, recognizing the profound impact of his artistry and advocacy.”
While discussing the celebration in his honor, RuPaul commented: “Atlanta cradled me in its loving arms during my formative years, so it is with great honor that I return to accept even more love from the city that made me who I am today.”
Part of the festivities included him driving the Rainbow Book Bus throughout Atlanta to promote access to books and media for the queer community.
RuPaul drives the bus to his final stop at the Dad’s Garage Theatre.
The Drag Race presenter also hosted an event at the Tabernacle to promote The House of Hidden Meanings, his memoir released just days earlier.
