A 55-year-old police detective has been charged with the alleged rape of a teenager whose case he was investigating.

The 19-year-old woman had alleged she was a victim of a sex crime and a senior officer from the sex crimes unit was assigned to her case.

The man was arrested last Friday and charged with having sexual intercourse without consent, sexual touching and misconduct in public office.

The detective has been suspended from his police duties and released on conditional bail.

Police in NSW said they were made aware a year ago that the woman made allegations against the officer who is based in Sydney’s north-west.

The Professional Standards Unit started an internal affairs investigation as soon as it found out about the allegations.

Neither the woman nor the police officer can be identified due to privacy reasons.

A police statement said that ‘In May 2022, officers attached to the Professional Standards Command commenced an investigation into reports of an alleged sexual assault involving a 19-year-old woman.

‘Following extensive inquiries, a 55-year-old detective senior constable — attached to a specialist command — was arrested and charged with sexual intercourse without consent, three counts of sexually touch another person without consent, and misconduct in public office.’

The detective, who has been suspended from his police position, was granted bail to appear at Penrith Local Court in western Sydney on July 8.

In an unrelated case, two Sydney police officers pleaded guilty last year to abusing their position as officers to pick up women for sex.

Angelo Dellosa, 31, and James Delinicolis, 30, pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office.

They approached a girl while she was in school uniform at Sydney’s Cabramatta train station in 2020.

In court, they said they had been threatened by prisoners and guards while in jail on remand after filming themselves having sex with the schoolgirl.

Delinicolis told the court he grew ‘very scared’ after receiving threats during his time at Silverwater Jail.

‘I was getting threats from other prisoners from the cells next door, they knew that I was a police officer,’ he said.

In May 2021, Delinicolis was sentenced to a two-year intensive corrections order and 400 hours community service.

Dellosa received an 18-month intensive corrections order, with 300 hours of volunteering.
