The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Skippy Foods is in the process of voluntarily recalling 9,353 cases of its peanut butter because certain products may potentially contain “a small fragment of stainless steel from a piece of manufacturing equipment.” The total number of peanut butter products being recalled amounts to a massive 161,692 pounds in total.

The recalled Skippy products include the following:

  • Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread (40 oz.)
  • Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread Club Pack (2/40 oz.)
  • Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread (16.3 oz.)
  • Creamy Peanut Butter Blended with Plant Protein (14 oz.)

If you are concerned about whether you have one of these spreads, you can confirm it by looking at the affected UPC codes and “best if used by” dates (all of which are in May 2023) listed on Skippy’s website. If you have not purchased one of these products, there’s no need to worry. No other sizes or types of Skippy peanut butter, or peanut butter products from other brands, have been impacted.

“Skippy Foods, LLC, out of an abundance of caution and with an emphasis on the quality of its products, is issuing the recall to ensure that consumers are made aware of the issue. The manufacturing facility’s internal detection systems identified the concern,” reads an FDA statement. So far, no consumers have filed complaints about the recalled products, meaning there have been no reported adverse reactions. All retailers which have sold or are selling the impacted kinds of peanut butter have been informed.

As reported by CBS News, the recalled products were sold at Walmart stores, along with other stores, across at least 18 states including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

If you do find that you have purchased one of the recalled products, please return it to the place of purchase to receive an exchange, or phone Skippy Foods Consumer Engagement at 1-866-475-4779 (between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday). Alternatively, you can visit the Skippy website for further details and instructions.
