She is the head coach of an American basketball team. She was also the head coach of USA Basketball for eight years, from the Olympic Games in 1986 to the Games in 1996. She led the United States to four gold medals, one bronze medal, and an 88-8 overall record. In 1990, she led a USA Select Team to a 2-3 record against Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union.

She also led the US to a 6-1 record and a gold medal at the COPABA World Cup Qualifying event in 1993. The gold medal qualified the United States for the 1994 FIBA World Cup, and she returned to lead the team that year.

She was the head coach of the legendary USA Women’s National Team in 1995-96, which went 52-0 in ten months and traveled more than 100,000 miles while competing in seven countries. Shooting From the Outside, a book about the 1995-96 campaign, was published in September 1997.

She has been the head coach at Stanford University since 1985. She has helped teams reach 13 NCAA Final Fours in 32 NCAA Tournament appearances and has led teams to 23 Pacific-12 Conference regular-season and 13 Pac-12 Tournament championships. By 2019, Stanford had won two NCAA championships and appeared in 12 Final Fours.

Tara’s 900–192 record at Stanford makes her only the fifth Division I coach in history to win 900 games in a single season. She led the Cardinal to their third NCAA championship with a 54-53 victory over Pac-12 rival Arizona Wildcats in April 2021. They had won a championship for the first time in 29 years.
