Taylan May is a Samoan professional rugby league footballer who has represented, as a winger, the Penrith Panthers (2021-Present) in the NRL (National Rugby League), an Australasian rugby league club competition that contains clubs from the Australian states of New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria; the Australian Capital Territory; and New Zealand. He used to play for the Minchinbury Jets in the PDJRL (Penrith District Junior Rugby League), an amateur rugby league competition for senior and junior rugby league clubs in the Penrith, Blacktown, and Blue Mountains areas of New South Wales. - Taylan first came into the spotlight during the 3rd round of the 2022 NRL season when he scored a hat-trick (when a player scores 3 or more tries (a try is a way of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league football; it is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition’s in-goal area (on or behind the goal line) in a game) in Penrith Panthers‘ 38-20 victory against the Newcastle Knights.
- In the very next round, against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, he scored 2 tries in Penrith Panthers‘ 26-16 win. In the season’s qualifying final match, during a 27-8 win against the Parramatta Eels, he was first sent to the sin bin for a dangerous high tackle and later suffered a hamstring injury.
- In late August 2022, he was found guilty of assaulting a man in an incident that occurred following his team’s victory in the 2021 NRL Grand Final (the conclusive and premiership-deciding game of the NRL season). He was ordered to pay a USD 1,000 fine but no criminal conviction was recorded.
- A few days later, he was suspended for 2 matches by the NRL but the suspension was backdated until the start of the 2023 NRL season which meant that he was allowed to participate in the knockout stages of the 2022 NRL season.
- Due to the injury sustained in the aforementioned qualifying final match, he was forced to miss out on the Penrith Panthers‘ 28-12 win in the NRL Grand Final, also against the Parramatta Eels. - In the 3rd group stage match at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup (held in October and November 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), he scored 4 tries for Samoa in a 62-4 win over France.
