Megan Marx has revealed that having her sexuality publicly questioned led to depression, anxiety and the breakdown of her same-sex relationship.
Appearing on SBS’ Insight on Tuesday, the former star of The Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise made headlines when she began a romance with Tiffany Scanlon.
The two women first met as contestants vying for Richie Strahan’s heart on The Bachelor in 2016, and began a very public relationship.

‘It was actually a dark period of my life. It was really rough,’ the 32-year-old told the program. ‘A lot of the other cast members on the show didn’t believe that we were actually together.
‘The public didn’t believe we were together. The media. It was an interesting thing having so many people commenting on your sexuality or trying to decide for you what your sexuality was.
‘A lot of people would say, “Okay, she’s lesbian then. Why did she go on The Bachelor to compete for a man if she’s gay?” And then the flipside of that was obviously that I didn’t like women at all and I was just pretending to trying to get attention.’

She continued: ‘A lot of people didn’t believe I was in that relationship for the right reasons. That I wasn’t actually into women.
‘There were a lot of feelings of shame, and around that time I really struggled with anxiety and depression. I think they’re issues I already had but it was exacerbated by the opinions of other people. And it really got to me because I started thinking maybe I am confused and don’t know what I want. It was a really dark rough time.’
Megan and Tiffany, 34, moved to Bali together to start a new life and escape scrutiny, but found that it followed them.

Big news! The couple’s relationship caused a media storm, with the pair even appearing on the cover of Maxim together in 2017 (pictured). They made international headlines as the first same-sex couple to emerge from the dating show franchise, but split after nine months
‘We ended up moving to a different country to try and get away from people’s opinions. And it just followed on with us. It was so much pressure. And the relationship didn’t survive. I feel like it didn’t have a chance to be honest,’ she said.

They made international headlines as the first same-sex couple to emerge from the dating show franchise, but split after nine months together.
Split: ‘We ended up moving to a different country to try and get away from people’s opinions. And it just followed on with us. It was so much pressure. And the relationship didn’t survive. I feel like it didn’t have a chance to be honest,’ Megan said
At the time, Tiffany claimed the media interest was one reason for the split, writing on her blog: ‘The time I paid the price for fame. Was it worth it? Probably not.’
Megan has since moved on – she debuted her romance with boyfriend Keith Newman at the beginning of the year and called him, ‘My favourite person’ in a recent Instagram post.
Her new relationship came less than a month after she split from her on-again-off-again relationship with Jake Ellis, 34.
Tiffany is believed to be single, after last year revealing her heartbreak over a split with a man she identified only as ‘David’.
