The office of the Federal Bureau of Investigations based in Newark, New Jersey, sent out a warning to “stay alert” to the state’s synagogues on Thursday, which they said came after an ongoing investigation showed the same pattern as seen in previous, violent attacks over the past few years.
CNN:
The FBI in Newark, New Jersey, said Thursday afternoon it has received “credible information of a broad threat to synagogues” in the state, according to a tweet from the office.
“We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility. We will share more information as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police,” the post said.
In a second tweet, the agency said it was taking a “proactive measure” with that warning, while “investigative processes are carried out.”
The CNN report continued with what a source told the outlet set off alarm bell, prompting the warning; the manner in which the threats were shared is the same as those which have led to previous attacks by extremists against communities:

An online posting with antisemitic comments in a forum that is frequented by extremists is what prompted the FBI’s alert, a law enforcement source told CNN.
While no specific target, timing or plan was mentioned, the nature of the post created enough concern on the part of the FBI that the agency decided to put a general warning out of an abundance of caution, the source said.
As we have previously written, there were stark, advance warnings about the attackers in several mass shootings events–in the Buffalo, NY, grocery store attack in May 2022, the man’s former classmates and others spoke up about his odd behavior and beliefs; as well as before the horrific, 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, which took the lives of 11 people.
My colleague Jennifer Oliver O’Connell noted, at the time of the Buffalo shooting, there’s often ample mention by those concerned about extremist attacks of events like those mentioned by CNN’s source (including the El Paso, Texas, shootings). But they manage to forget what happened during the Laguna Woods (California) shooting at Geneva Presbyterian Church–where church members held the wannabe mass shooter (who first killed one person) at bay, until authorities could arrive.
