Tony Leung Chiu-wai Facts
- Tony’s father, a chronic gambler, had abandoned the family when he was 8 years old. Thereafter, he and his younger sister were raised by their mother.
- After dropping out of school at the age of 15, he had worked several odd jobs including as a grocer’s runner at his uncle’s shop and a home appliance salesman in a Hong Kong shopping center.
- About 2 years later, he met future actor and comedian Stephen Chow who encouraged him to become an actor. Tony and Stephen have maintained a great friendship ever since.
- In the early 1990s, he had lost interest in acting and had even considered quitting. However, his career turned around when he won the ‘Best Actor’ award at both the Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards for his work in Chungking Express (1994). He had become just the 2nd actor to achieve this feat after Danny Lee in 1984. Tony went on to repeat this double with Infernal Affairs in 2003.
- A Buddhist, he is known to have donated to the construction of several Buddhist institutions and has been seen doing Buddhist palm greetings. He had also made a pro bono (without charge) appearance in the 2016 Bhutanese Buddhist film titled Hema Hema: Sing Me a Song While I Wait.
- In 2016, he was reported to have been part of a ceremony in India that was attended by members of the Tibetan government-in-exile. He had faced a lot of backlash from Chinese officials and media due to this.
