Wasim Jaffer Facts

  1. A child prodigy, Wasim was earmarked for big things from a very young age. During his prolific school career, he had once scored a mammoth inning of 400 runs not out. He was about 15 years old at that time and that particular knock had helped secure his entry into first-class cricket.
  2. In just the 2nd match of his first-class career, he had scored a triple century. This score of 314 runs not out had set several new records for Mumbai. It was the first time in history that a batsman had made a triple century for Mumbai away from home. Also, his partnership of 459 runs with Sulakshan Kulkarni had made the pair the first from Mumbai to pass the partnership mark of 400 runs.
  3. A stalwart of domestic cricket in general, and first-class cricket in particular, he holds several records in the Ranji Trophy. With more than 12,000 runs to his name in the competition, he is head-and-shoulders above anybody else, as of December 2021. The next-highest run-getter had not even crossed the 9,500 run mark.
  4. In December 2018, he had scored his 55th century in first-class cricket. During the quarter-final match of the 2018–19 season of the Ranji Trophy, he had scored the 19,000th run of his first-class cricket career overall.
  5. In January 2019, he had also become the most capped player in Ranji Trophy history when he had appeared in his 146th match in the competition, surpassing Madhya Pradesh veteran Devendra Bundela’s record of 145 matches.
  6. His test debut (February 2000), last test (April 2008), ODI debut (November 2006), and last ODI (November 2006), had co-incidentally, all come against the same opposition – South Africa.
