Recently, I’ve had tons of beauty products come across my desk in bright colors, glittering effects, and transformative textures. (Remember the bubble mask?) The trend is no coincidence. Companies know that the more photogenic and video-friendly a product is, the more likely it will go viral on Instagram and sell out. But as consumers—of beauty goods and of social media—we know that what you see on the screen can be misleading.

We wanted to know if these picture-perfect beauty products live up to the hype. So SELF staffers scouted some of the most coveted, selfie-ready items from Instagram and tested them IRL. Sometimes what you see on Instagram is a total illusion, but these products are the real deal.
