Moechella, an event described as a “Defense Festival that amplifies the culture of Washington, DC,” held an event to celebrate Juneteenth.
However, during a press conference, the police said that the event was not allowed.
“All it takes is for one person to bring a weapon into the situation for it to be deadly and in this case a 15-year-old lost his life,” Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said.
Family
“My condolences to the family of that 15-year-old, as well as to the other people who were injured,” he said, adding that he will go to the hospital to see how the police and his family are doing.
Contee said there did not appear to be an exchange of fire, but multiple firearms were recovered at the scene.

Shooting
The shooting occurred in the area of 14th and U Street, according to the DC Police Department’s Twitter account.
Another tweet called on civilians to be on the lookout for a 5-foot-4 suspect with curly hair and dressed entirely in black.
Contee also stated that a discussion will take place with the Attorney General as to whether the Moechella organizers will bear any responsibility.
Mayor Muriel Bowser echoed that statement when speaking to reporters.
“We have a child who was killed today at an event that was not properly planned for the number of people who were here,” she said.
“Boss and I will continue to make sure we have the resources we need in these corridors, but we need some accountability here.”
