Who is Alex Verdu Munoz ?
An Argentine citizen accused of murdering a Crufts champion dog breeder has died in jail while awaiting trial.
Alex Verdu Munoz, 26, was found dead on May 15 at HMP Strangeways in Manchester, Staffordshire Police said.
Valerie Freer Killed
He had been accused of killing Valerie Freer, 68, who died of neck injuries in the town of Whittington, near Lichfield, on February 24.
Paramedics found her in the driveway of the bungalow she shared with her husband around 10:53 a.m.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that Valerie died as a result of her neck injuries.
Mrs. Freer, who lived on Lichfield Road, was a well-known breeder of Samoyed dogs.
One of her dogs, Champion Nikara Dancer, won the top prize for Best in Show at Crufts in 2014.
In the same year, another of his dogs, a Samoyed named Dan The Man, was runner-up in the Best in Show category at Crufts.
Muñoz was to stand trial accused of murdering Valerie, who was found dead outside her bungalow in the town of Whittington, Staffordshire.
The force said officers were contacted by Greater Manchester Police and the Ministry of Justice to inform them that she had died.
Staffordshire Police said her death was not being treated as suspicious, her next of kin had been informed and a coroner’s file was being prepared.
Family
Detective Inspector Ian Fitzgerald said: “I would like to assure the community that we remain committed to helping Valerie’s family, as well as all those affected by the events that took place in Whittington in February of this year.
“We will continue to support our colleagues at Greater Manchester Police as they work to prepare a file for Her Majesty’s coroner for an inquest into Mr Munoz’s death in due course.”
Police said Ms. Freer’s family and others affected by the crimes Muñoz allegedly committed continue to receive support from specialized family liaison officers.

Mr. Munoz, of no fixed address, was also charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, burglary, possession of an item with a blade and dangerous driving.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Officers were contacted by colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and the Ministry of Justice at HMP Strangeways, Manchester on 16 May 2022 and reported that one inmate had died.”

A file will be prepared for HM Coroner by the Greater Manchester Police shortly.
Arrested and Charged
‘Prior to his death, Munoz had been charged with murder in connection with the death of Valerie Freer in Whittington, near Lichfield, on February 24.
‘He also faced charges of aggravated robbery, burglary, possession of a bladed item and dangerous driving.
“Specialized Staffordshire Police Family Liaison Officers continue to support the family of Valerie Freer and others affected by the crimes Mr Munoz had been charged with prior to his death.”
After the murder, Valerie’s family paid tribute to a woman who had an “illuminating smile and infectious laugh” and was “endlessly loved by family and friends.”
They added: ‘Words cannot even begin to describe how truly devastated we are to have lost our wonderful Val.
“An incredibly beautiful lady both inside and out, she was always so loving and caring to everyone around her.
‘Val is infinitely loved by family and friends all over the world. We will miss her very much and she will remain forever in our hearts.
