Who is Allan Meehan ?
Like any new local CEO of a multinational company, Allan Meehan has a lot of work to do, but the consequences of failure could be more serious for him.
The new president of the outlaw motorcycle gang Comanchero takes charge of an organization facing major internal and external challenges after a particularly chaotic first half of the year.
Meehan’s immediate predecessor is in jail on a murder charge, another of the men who previously held his job was shot dead four years ago, and his top boss is on the run abroad.
Police are already working hard to limit his powers as the new chief after officers visited him at his home in Yerrinbool, in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, on Friday.
They gave Meehan a notice informing her that they intended to go to the Supreme Court and obtain a felony prevention order against her.
The order would allow police to prevent Meehan from associating with other cyclists in NSW or using phones or bank accounts that are not approved by them.
Arrested
Criminal Group Squad Commander Superintendent Grant Taylor said the order was only taken against the “most serious” people.
To further complicate settling into the job, the club’s top enforcer barely survived a shootout in May that left him unable to play his part and claimed the life of his brother.
Dozens of other Comancheros have been arrested in federal police raids as part of Operation Ironside, one of Australia’s biggest crackdown on organized crime.
Shortly before Meehan’s elevation, Detective Inspector Graham Banks of Victoria Police’s anti-bikie Echo task force said the Comos were struggling to maintain an effective leadership structure.
“Together with partner agencies, the Echo Taskforce is committed to attacking any attempt by the Comancheros to rebuild their ability to cause harm within the community,” he said.
Meehan, who had been considered the heir apparent for some time, must have thought carefully about taking what has been a poisoned chalice, but the racing cyclist seems to have the right resume for the job.
The 35-year-old grew up in public housing in Liverpool, south-west Sydney, and joined the Rebels when he was just 18, eventually becoming president of that club’s Cronulla chapter.
Former national chairman Mark Buddle, who is now the club’s self-proclaimed ‘commander of the world’, reportedly enticed him to move to Comanchero.
Buddle, wanted by Australian authorities and worth an estimated $100 million, is believed to be in Cyprus or Turkey.

The police want to talk to him about crimes like the 2010 murder of Sydney security guard Gary Allibon, significant drug shipments, and any knowledge he may have about recent underworld killings.
Meehan was promoted to commander of Comanchero’s Canberra chapter early last year after the assassination of its president Pitasoni Ulavalu and became Sydney chief six months later.
Charged
Ross remained a leader after spending five years in prison for that atrocity until he was usurped by Beirut-born Mahmoud ‘Mick’ Hawi, who was just 22 when he took control in 2003.
Under Hawi, the Comanchero further expanded their recruitment to include young men with Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander, Greek, and Serb backgrounds.
Running the club has always been dangerous. In November 2007, a car in which Hawi was traveling was hit by bullets outside Grappa Ristorante in Leichhardt, Sydney’s inner-west.
Two men stopped and fired up to 10 shots before speeding away.
Hawi was in charge when 12 Comanchero faced five Hells Angels at Sydney Airport in March 2009 when Angels associate Anthony Zervas was hit with a bollard and killed.
That murder in front of dozens of horrified witnesses led to a NSW police crackdown on bikes that has never ceased.
Shooting
In the wake of Zahed’s shooting and Murray’s arrest, Meehan took to Instagram with another post: ‘Bad times don’t last but bad times do!’
Nazlioglu’s murder was the 14th in the Sydney underworld in the last two years, but Meehan is said not to be planning to move to Melbourne.
A source recently said that Meehan was seen as “pretty complete” but has a cool head to control some of the more volatile elements of the gang.
He is highly respected among Comanchero’s remaining old guard, as well as new recruits, according to the Herald Sun.
“He has spent his entire adult life in motorcycle gangs,” a source told the publication. He knows no other life.
A Catholic who attends mass regularly, Meehan might want to pray for protection from a power even higher than his former mentor Buddle.
