Archie Battersbee Biography
Who is Archie Battersbee ?
A High Court judge prepares to rule on the future of a boy who has not regained consciousness after suffering brain damage more than a month ago.
Archie Battersbee, 12, was found unconscious at his home in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, with a ligature around his neck on April 7 and has not woken since.
Specialists treating him at the Royal London Hospital believe it is “highly likely” Archie is brain dead and say life-sustaining treatment should be stopped.
They have been opposed by Archie’s parents, Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee, who insist on more time before Archie’s life support is disconnected.
Hospital bosses have asked a Superior Court Family Division judge to make a judgment in Archie’s best interests.
Ms Dance, 46, said: “Archie had a serious brain injury just four weeks ago, there hasn’t been enough time to see what he can do.”
I have refused to undergo brainstem testing to declare him brain dead. It’s too soon.
He has squeezed my fingers tightly. I think that’s his way of letting me know that he’s still here and that he just needs more time.
“We don’t know the extent of the damage, but I’d rather have some Archie than no Archie at all just to wake up every morning and kiss his beautiful little face.”
“I am fighting for as long as possible to watch and wait.”
Archie’s brother Tom, 22, and his sister Lauren, 20, come to visit him every day and try to get him to respond. His family talks to him and plays his favorite song, Lucis Dreams by Juice WRLD, along with voice notes from his friends.
“Hope is what I’m holding on to right now,” Ms. Dance said. ‘Where there’s life there’s hope.
‘Until it is God’s way, I will not accept his leaving. I know of miracles when people have come back from being brain dead.

“He may not be the same as he was, but if there is a chance that he can live a happy life after this, I want to give it to him.”
Solicitor Fiona Paterson, representing the Barts Health NHS Trust, told the court that Archie’s treatment team “consider it very likely that he is, in fact, brain dead”.
They say that any of Archie’s movements are reflexes.
She said: “Even if Archie is not brain dead, his treatment team considers it highly unlikely that he will regain consciousness and therefore it is in his best interest to withdraw mechanical ventilation.”
Mrs Justice Arbuthnot is scheduled to consider the case in a private hearing in London today.
Family
Archie’s older brother Tom, 22, comes to the hospital every day to visit him and tries to get him to respond.
Hollie and Archie’s father, Paul Battersbee, wants to give Archie more time to see if his condition improves before making the decision to take him off life support.
Archie’s sister, Lauren, created an Instagram page ‘Spread the purple wave’ with regular updates on Archie’s condition.
Miss Dance has speculated that Archie may have been taking part in an ‘online challenge’ when he was injured.
A campaign organization called the Christian Legal Center says it is supporting Archie’s family.
“We support Archie and his family every step of the way,” said center executive director Andrea Williams.
“We want to give him every opportunity in life.”
