Who is Cabbie Sohail Ali ?
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after three men were killed when a van went the wrong way on a motorway and collided head-on with a taxi.
Taxi driver Sohail Ali, 28, his passenger Simon McHugh, 29, and 18-year-old Kyden Leadbeater, who was in the van but was not driving, died after the crash on the M606 near Bradford.
Arrested and Charged
Officers began chasing the Ford Transit van, believed to be stolen, after it failed to stop for a marked police vehicle around 10:45 p.m. m. from yesterday.
The van then drove on the wrong side of the M606 southbound from the Chain Bar roundabout towards Bradford, and collided with the taxi head-on.
The two men in the taxi died at the scene, while Kyden later died in hospital.
West Yorkshire Police have been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The force arrested a boy on suspicion of causing the death by dangerous driving after the accident.
Sohail, who worked for Arrival Taxis, was traveling to Huddersfield to drop off a customer when he was killed.
The 15-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but remained in the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The IOPC sent investigators to the scene and said evidence indicated police did not follow the van the wrong way onto the highway.
IOPC Regional Director Thea Walton said: “We are conducting an independent investigation into West Yorkshire Police (WYP) involvement prior to a traffic collision on the M606 near Chain Bar roundabout, Bradford, around 10:45 p.m. on Monday June 13. .
WYP notified us after the collision and an independent investigation was declared at 12:51am today (Tuesday June 14).
“We understand that a Ford Transit van failed to stop for police before being involved in a collision with a taxi after the van entered the M606 on the wrong side of the road.
‘IOPC investigators are attending the scene and post-incident police procedure. We have begun to collect information and our investigation is at an early stage.
Statement
His family said in a statement: “He was a young, hard-working, happy, gentle and kind individual.
‘From a young age, he has always been a hard worker and has always gone the extra mile for his family, friends and anyone in the community.
‘If he was ever needed, he was always the first to offer his support and love.
“He had the ability to make you feel comfortable with his presence and his words, he knew exactly what to say and when to say it.
‘Sohail had many cousins, all of whom he was like a best friend, he will be greatly missed by all of us, his father, mother, brothers, sister and our whole family.
“We are all heartbroken by this heartbreaking and shocking news.”

Another described him as “an amazing and kind person.”
Kyden’s sister, Casey-Leigh Devlin-Leadbeater, said she suffered “swelling in her brain that she couldn’t survive.” She added: ‘I love you, my beautiful brother.’
Relatives of the taxi passenger, who was returning home from his shift as head chef at the Jurys Inn in Bradford city centre, also paid tribute.
Andrew Ingham wrote: ‘My cousin Simon McHugh was traveling home last night after finishing his shift at work, he was traveling in a taxi on the M606 at 10.45pm when the taxi was hit by an oncoming van followed by the policeman. Unfortunately Simon died at the scene.
“To say that I am devastated is an understatement. Rest in peace Simon, we will miss you.
His brother Alastair McHugh wrote: “My brother Simon McHugh was traveling home last night after finishing his shift at work, traveling in a taxi on the M606 at 10.45pm when the taxi was hit by an oncoming van following by the police.
‘Unfortunately Simon died at the scene. To say that I am devastated is an understatement. I feel angry that he has been taken away just to mind his own business. Rest in peace little brother.
A 17-year-old in the truck remained in the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the force said.

West Yorkshire Police stated: “At 10.45pm on Monday a van failed to stop at a marked roads patrol unit and was then driven in the wrong direction on the M606 southbound from the Chain Bar roundabout towards Bradford, where she was involved in a front”. collision with a taxi.
