Who is Christopher Ketterer?

Christopher Ketterer, 29, lost his job in June 2020 after a message he sent to five close friends from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was widely shared and eventually seen by bosses.

He appealed against the dismissal, but it was rejected after an employment tribunal found that Ketterer had violated the values of the fire service.

Speaking to MailOnline, Ketterer said he believes disciplinary action was taken against him after an amendment to the fire service’s working conditions was rejected, with 60 per cent of members voting against.

A Scottish employment court heard that in the early hours of February 14, 2020, Ketterer was on duty when, just before 3am. m., he answered an emergency call as part of a four-person team.

It was reported that a person with reduced mobility was ‘trapped’ in the bathroom of his house and that he was unable to get up from the bathroom floor.

The team arrived at the house but was then redirected to a second address, the home of the caller’s cousin, so they could pick up a set of keys from the original address.

The team collected the keys, went to the caller’s house and helped him into his wheelchair and found that he was not trapped but could not get up from the toilet.

The court heard that the plaintiff and his fellow firefighters were frustrated at being called about the incident as they did not believe it was a genuine emergency and the person he called was known to have made similar calls in the past.

Ketterer perceived that the behavior of the caller

Ketterer perceived that the behavior of the caller and his cousin indicated that they were trivializing their role status and knowing they were wasting firefighters’ time.

The incident occurred at a time when firefighters were discussing pay and conditions and whether this type of incident should be part of their purview and whether there would be more such calls if the role was expanded.

They were also unhappy that the call had been partly a blue light incident when it was not an emergency.

Ketterer finished her 14-hour night shift and posted the message describing the incident, which she said was “not an emergency at all” and mentioned “for you who are still between a yes and no vote,” a reference to the workplace review. under consideration.

He said the team should have picked a McDonald’s for the guy on top of everything they were doing, he described the man’s legs as too fat to get him out of the bathroom and said the room smelled like “shit”.

He wrote: “Just to recap we were taken under blue lights to one address and then for control to come and tell us to go to another address to pick up a set of keys to get us into the first address never heard of anything like this .before it’s an absolute embarrassment (angry face emoji) there’s no emergency at all (sic)’.

Crime

It says any inappropriate posting can lead to disciplinary action and, in extreme cases, civil and criminal law.

Labor judge Brian Campbell said his appeal against his firing for gross misconduct failed after he found Ketterer had violated fire service values.

He said: ‘The publication, which Mr Ketterer to his credit never denied sending, largely speaks for itself in terms of its tone and language.

‘It was a totally inappropriate way of referring to a vulnerable member of the public, which again to his credit he accepted in hindsight.

“He showed genuine remorse for his isolated act of misconduct, and he may not have fully appreciated the seriousness of that act at the time.

“According to the evidence, there were no problems overall with his performance, job commitment or popularity among his colleagues.”

Ketterer said he was disappointed with the way the disciplinary process was conducted and said letters of support from eight other fire stations, which unanimously endorsed him, were never read.

He said that he has overcome the incident and is currently training to be a gas engineer, hoping to be fully qualified in the next three months.

He also became a father six months ago and said his dismissal came at the worst possible time due to the Covid pandemic.
