Duane Bailey Biography
Who is Duane Bailey?
Duane Bailey’s brother, Bill Bailey, 67, was killed in April 2019 when a runaway semi-trailer loaded with wood slammed into cars on the interstate, causing a massive crowd and a fireball explosion.
Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, was sentenced last month to 110 years behind bars after being convicted of 27 counts, including reckless and careless driving.
But after widespread public backlash, including from Kim Kardashian, Gov. Jared Polis made the rare decision to cut the sentence to just ten years.
Duane Bailey called the Democrat a “despicable human being” and accused the governor of using the wildfires in the state to distract attention from his decision.
‘You also have to realize that will not pass the full 10 years in which the governor imposed the sentence on him. He could be out in as little as 5 years, ” Bailey told CBS Denver. Would his brother’s life be adequately compensated for if he spent a year and a quarter of death in prison?
Killed
The impact caused a fireball explosion that incinerated cars and trucks, killing four people and injuring several more. Aguilera-Mederos testified that the brakes on his semitrailer failed as he descended a steep incline off Interstate 70 in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (pictured) said the ‘atypical’ sentence was’ unfair
He said Aguilera-Mederos lied about her experience on her job application and “exaggerated job titles.”
She drove her car with such force that by the time she reached the Berthoud pass, 30 miles from the crash site, his brakes were already fuming … However, she is still driving over the speed limit. There are people on I-70 talking about how they sped past it, ” Bailey told ABC.
‘He has testified that he is in a panic. Who wouldn’t be? But, he put himself in that position. It wasn’t an accident. ‘
Victim
Bailey said the victims’ families had agreed that the 110-year sentence was harsh, but that reducing it to 10 was too lenient.
“It’s gotten to the point where people think he’s the victim now, and he’s not. He is not the victim. This accident killed four people and four good people, ” Bailey said.
He [Governor Polis] considered the 110-year sentence to be too harsh. And we told him we agreed with that. We also told him that he should stay out of it, ‘he added.

The accident … it wasn’t intentional, it wasn’t intentional, your honor. I did everything I could as a man. I put myself in danger so as not to harm anyone else. ‘
