Who is Evander Tuala ?

A young man is fighting for his life in hospital and three people have been charged following a bloody fight on Oxford Street in Sydney.

Police are looking for witnesses to the fight that involved 15 people early Saturday morning between two groups outside the Oxford Tavern in Darlinghurst.

Evander Tuala, 23, from Western Sydney was allegedly hit in the head during the fight and knocked unconscious after hitting the ground.

Paramedics rushed him to St Vince’s Hospital and he remains in critical condition.

Three men, two 20-year-olds and one 19-year-old, from East Sydney were arrested at the scene and later charged with fracas.

One man was denied bail and was due to appear in Parramatta Local Court, while the other two were granted conditional bail. One is due to appear in Downing Center Local Court next month.

Tuala’s aunt Niu Tuala wrote a touching tribute dedicated to her ‘sweet’ nephew on social media.

“You came into this world and brought so much love to our family,” she said.

Now you’ve left us shattered. It was stolen from us like a thief in the night.

Detective Superintendent John Duncan said the fight started outside the Oxford Tavern after an incident involving the two groups inside, but police are not sure what sparked the fight.

“We understand that both groups were in licensed premises, it was a very small incident and then security kicked them out,” he said.

“As a result of that, a fight broke out outside the licensed premises.”

Family

Police broke up the fight and officers chased several people on foot.

Police confirmed that Tuala had sustained serious head injuries after his head hit the ground.

“This young man is fighting for his life in the hospital,” Superintendent Duncan said.

“The family will be devastated and our thoughts are with them.”

Superintendent Duncan said there would be a number of witnesses, including hotel patrons, and urged anyone who saw or was involved in the fight to come forward.

“We are looking for everyone involved,” he said.

“No matter what their role is, I think they contact [police] … they come to us instead of us coming to you.”
