Who is Hubert Meulens?
Hubert Meulens was walking toward an MTA office when a woman approached him from behind and cut him on the head near Whitehall Street around 8:25 a.m. local time, according to police.
“When I came around the corner I got hit in the head,” Meulens said. “I thought something had come down from a building, an object or something.”
“She just came from behind,” the man recalled. “It was more of a hit. She hit me on the right side of her skull above the ear.”
The woman, later identified as 20-year-old Deashe Calhoun, fled the scene. However, Meulens proceeded to go after her, when she suddenly turned around and sprayed his eyes with a container of bear repellant.
The spray temporarily blinded Meulens, but he was able to alert a police officer. Moments later, officers spotted Calhoun with the sterilization in hand and moved to arrest Calhoun, finding the machete she had hidden.
Witnesses say Calhoun did not appear to react when she confronted police officers.

“She was standing there while I guess they were calling everyone,” said the witness, who was on her way to work. “Four or five patrol cars passed by. She was just standing there, no emotion or anything.”
Arrested
Calhoun was arrested and charged with felony assault, weapons possession, stalking and hate crime assault.
“It should be attempted murder,” Meulens said. “Even with the first hit, she could have died. It was just a hit.”
“I’m surprised she wasn’t in prison,” he said of his attacker. “She needs to be away from society for a long time.”
According to police, this is not the first time Calhoun has attacked something with a gun and bear spray. She has been linked to a wave of assaults since March 26 and has been arrested 5 times this summer.
