Who is Jacqueline Durand ?
A Texas college student who was mauled by two dogs while dog-sitting for a Dallas doctor and his wife was left “permanently and catastrophically disfigured” after losing “most of her face below her eyes,” according to a lawsuit.
Jacqueline Durand, a 22-year-old student at the University of Texas at Dallas, went to the home of Dr. Justin and Ashley Bishop on Dec. 23 after being hired to dog-sit while they were away.
They assured him that when he went to the house, the dogs would already be in their cages and kennels, but on the day of Durand’s visit, the animals were allowed to roam freely in the house.
Durand’s attorneys say that as soon as she opened the door to her home, the dogs pounced on her and viciously attacked her by Lucy, a German shepherd mix, and Bender, a pit bull mix.
Statement
“The owner assured Jacqueline that the dogs would be crated,” Durand’s attorney, Chip Brooker, said in a statement.
“But shortly before her first visit, the owner texted Jacqueline to say that she hadn’t left the dogs in the kennel before she left town. A sign on the front door even warns visitors about the violent pets that live in the house.
‘Crazy dogs. Please do not knock or ring the bell. Call or text instead,” the sign reads.
After the dogs pushed the door open, they knocked Durand off balance, causing him to fall and drop his cell phone.
The dogs then proceeded to ‘catastrophically’ mutilate her, ripping off and eating both her ears, her nose, her lips and most of her face below her eyes, according to the lawsuit.
The dogs were so violent and bloodthirsty that they took all of Jacqueline’s clothes, including her blue jeans.
The attack only ended after a neighbor heard the commotion coming from next door.
Emergency services were called immediately and Durand was taken directly to a Level 1 trauma center, equipped to handle the most serious conditions.

The attack occurred a day before her 22nd birthday and just days after she had already gone to meet both dogs at her home with their owner, specifically to meet them and their routines.
During the brutal attack, the dogs attacked her entire body leaving her with hundreds of puncture wounds.

She currently remains hospitalized after undergoing multiple reconstructive surgeries, with more to come.
In a Jan. 18 Facebook post, Durand thanked people for their well wishes from her hospital bed.

“I am so blessed to be surrounded by so much love and support as I go through this difficult time in my life. Thank you to everyone who supports and loves me every step of the way from the very beginning! I am making good progress every day that I am here. Prayers are being answered! Thank you,’ he wrote.
The dogs were captured and placed in the care of the city of Coppell before a municipal judge ruled that both dogs should be euthanized, according to the lawsuit.
Durand is accusing Dr. Bishop and his wife of negligence for allegedly failing to monitor, secure and train the animals, as well as “failing to provide a safe environment for their guests,” according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit places the blame squarely on the bishops who allowed the animals to remain on their property while “knowing they had dangerous propensities.”
He alleges that the bishops knew of the dog’s tendencies toward violence because of the “mad dog” warning sign that was visible to anyone walking to the front door.
The lawsuit argues that Durand’s situation was made even more dangerous by virtue of the fact that the dogs were not in their kennels, as she had promised herself.
The 22-year-old is seeking a jury trial and compensation of more than $1 million.
“Jacqueline will always measure her life in terms of before and after she opens that door,” Brooker said. “She will be permanently disfigured for the rest of her life, and we are filing this lawsuit to ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable.”
Between 2005 and 2017, there were a total of 433 deaths caused by dogs in the US.
Pit bulls continue to top the list of America’s most dangerous dog breeds, having been responsible for 284 fatal attacks on humans between 2005 and 2017.
The second breed on the list, Rottweilers, came in a distant second with 45.
