Who is Lance Storz ?
Lance Storz, 49, of Allen, appeared in court Friday following a shooting that killed two law enforcement officers and wounded six more.
Two officers were killed when a man opened fire on police trying to serve an arrest warrant at a home in Kentucky Thursday night, authorities said. Five other people were injured at the scene in the rural area in a mountainous part of eastern Kentucky, according to an arrest citation.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office identified the slain officers as Deputy William Petry and Prestonsburg Police Capt. Ralph Frasure.
Three injured officers remain in the hospital, state police said in a statement. One is in critical condition and two in stable condition. One officer was treated and released, state police said.
Arrested and Charged
An emergency management official was also injured and a police dog was killed, according to the citation.
Police took 49-year-old Lance Storz into custody Thursday night.
Responding officers were met with “pure hell” when they arrived at the scene, Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt told reporters Friday afternoon.
“They didn’t have a chance,” he said.
Storz used a rifle to fire multiple rounds at officers around his residence on Main Street in Allen, Kentucky, according to the citation.

Hunt said four officers initially responded and then called for backup when they were shot. Officers on the scene were under fire for hours, Hunt said. He said Storz gave up after negotiations that included members of Storz’s family.
Hunt said the officers were serving a court order related to a domestic violence situation. State police were called to the scene at 6:30 p.m. m., joining local officers who were already on the scene.
Storz was arraigned Friday morning by a Pike County judge. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder of a police officer and was jailed on $10 million bail. One of the charges was originally attempted murder of a police officer, but at the hearing, a judge said he was raised to murder. He also faces another charge of attempted murder and assault on a service animal.
Investigation
State police said in a statement that they are investigating the shooting.
Attorney General Daniel Cameron said in a social media post on Friday that he is “heartbroken to learn of the deaths of two law enforcement officers.”
“Our police displayed unimaginable heroism and sacrifice last night in the face of evil,” Cameron said.
“Floyd County and our brave first responders suffered a tragic loss last night. I want to ask all of Kentucky to join me in praying for this community,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said in a social media post Friday morning. “This is a difficult morning for our community.”
