Who is Lina Sarder Khil ?
The father of a four-year-old Afghan girl who disappeared without a trace in Texas nearly six months ago has been terrorized online by conspiracy theorists who claim he sold her as a child bride.
Lina Sarder Khil disappeared from the playground of a San Antonion apartment complex in December. Her disappearance is being treated as a missing person case and there are no suspects. The search for her has been suspended indefinitely, though the San Antonio Police Department said it was still following up on leads and the case remains open.
At the time of her disappearance, her father, Riaz Sardar Khil, 27, said his pregnant wife was watching Lina when she walked onto a nearby path and disappeared. Her mother initially thought that she might have returned to the family’s apartment in Villa Del Cabo.
On Tuesday, Khil told DailyMail.com through a translator that he and his wife Varmina were devastated both by the disappearance of his daughter and by the vile online comments directed at them.
‘Every time I open Facebook or other social networks, I see hate messages and accusations that say: ‘I sold my daughter to be a child bride; I sent her back to Afghanistan; ‘I kidnapped her’ or ‘my wife did something to our daughter and I am covering for her,’ he said in Pashto through translator Lawang Mangal.
He added: ‘All of these are wrong and wrong about me. All these false accusations make me very sad and I am afraid that someone will harm me and my family.”
Lina and her family moved to the US in 2019 from Afghanistan after fleeing the country. Her father helped US troops in the country and the family was brought to the US as refugees when the Taliban regained control of the country.
He said that when he came home from work recently, he almost got attacked by a hostile stranger in the parking lot. He said that neighbors came to his defense and that the man who tried to attack him was a stranger and not part of his Afghan community.
Khil also said that conspiracy theorists have claimed that his daughter was taken from him in retaliation for working for US troops in Afghanistan.
‘I came to the United States with great hope and that I will have a bright future, but all my hopes are dead now. America was different than I thought it was,’ he said.
‘There is pre-planned propaganda. There is no such kind of conspiracy theory or propaganda in Afghanistan.’
Lina was only 3 years old when she mysteriously disappeared. In the photo, she is sitting sweetly on her father’s lap with the lake as a backdrop.
She stated that child abductions were not common in Afghanistan and that if a child goes missing, it is usually for ransom. There are other times when a child runs away, they are usually found to be safe. And, in the most extreme cases, a child is sold because the families are very poor.
Khil also has a two-and-a-half-year-old son, Rayhan, and became a father for the third time after his wife gave birth to a boy named Saud on Saturday.
The joys of having a new child have been overshadowed by the disappearance of her eldest son and his only daughter.

“We are very happy to have a new baby at home, but we are very scared for the future of our children because we lost Lina,” said Khil.
When he’s not looking for his little girl, he works as a driver for Amazon and Uber so he can feed her family. He said he, too, has been extremely bummed out by the police response.
‘We are not being informed of what is happening. Whenever I call the same thing the same. I don’t think they’re working on the case,” he said. We have no clues. Any.’
Pam Allen, executive director of Eagles Flight Advocacy and Outreach, who has been working with the Khil family, has been involved in helping the Afghan refugee community since 2009.

She told DailyMail.com that she believes the family is being treated differently because they are refugees.
“If this were an American family, it would be totally different,” she said. ‘The police and the FBI do not communicate with the family. The week Lina disappeared and the divers were searching a creek, the parents were not informed. They found out on social media.
A prayer vigil was held at the Mosque on January 29, Allen said.
‘The mayor of San Antonio was present and told the community to be alert. He said Lina was ‘a daughter of San Antonio, but on the other side of that sentiment there are some really horrible responses to this family’s tragedy,’ he said.
‘This is not a shared trauma. This child’s family goes to bed and wakes up with this trauma every day. No police initiated communication to the family,’ Allen said.
And he added: ‘The boy from San Antonio seems to have been forgotten.’
Allen said that he had to cancel the last two searches for Lina because the stalking had gotten so bad.
She said that the last time they searched, her husband hired a bodyguard because he was concerned about Allen’s well-being.
“There are people doing these searches with us, filming us and taking pictures of us and telling us different stories,” he said. “It’s outrageous and it’s inconceivable and people hear that.”
He also said the family has had random strangers calling themselves psychics knocking on their door.
Investigation
A Jordan man, Allen said, claimed Lina was in California.
“It was heartbreaking to hear it but then realize it wasn’t true,” Allen said.
“The psychic activity became really aggressive,” Allen said. ‘My Facebook was hacked, my son’s family was harassed and intruders came. My mother’s house was being watched. Lawang [the translator] could not let his family leave his house. One man even had to be arrested for going to Riaz’s house.
She added: ‘These harassers and haters have actually produced a lot of distraction for us and law enforcement. I had to hire a lawyer and a private investigator. We’ve had to do things quietly when there are so many who really want to help.’
San Antonio Police Department Public Information Officer Jennifer Saucedo Rodriguez told DailyMail.com that the investigation into Lina’s disappearance remains active and leads are still being followed.
‘Lina remains a missing person as a crime was never established. On the night of her disappearance, a preliminary search did not result in finding her in the areas where she is known to go or within her safety zone,” she said.
“The initial fear was the possibility of a kidnapping by a stranger, so the search was expanded to the extent that it became. The expanded scope resulted in a large amount of data collected through interviews, CCTV coverage of the area, etc.
She said that SVU and the FBI will not suspend our investigations until all leads are exhausted.
