Linda Lavin was born in Portland, Maine, on October 15, 1937, to David Joseph Lavin and Lucille (née Potter). Her father was an entrepreneur, and her mother was a professional opera singer. Her grandparents were Russian Jews who immigrated to the United States.
Lavin began performing on stage when he was five years old. She attended the Waynflete School and later the College of William and Mary. Lavin performed in several Broadway shows while in college.

Linda Lavin began her acting career as Gloria Thorpe in a television adaptation of the musical Damn Yankees with Phil Silvers in 1967. Later in her career, she had recurring roles in television sitcoms such as The Nurses, Rhoda, Harry O and Kaz, and others.
Lavin rose to prominence after starring in the CBS network’s Alice. She appeared in all nine seasons of the show and was nominated for two Golden Globes and a Primetime Emmy.
Linda in Wonderland, her own television show, premiered in 1980. In the 1990s, Lavin appeared in two popular sitcoms: Room for Two (1992-93)[13] and Conrad Bloom (1998).
