Lorena Ochoa is the third of four children of an artist and real estate developer parents, and grew up in Guadalajara. Lorena started playing gold at the age of five, and while a junior, she won 22 state tournaments in Guadalajara and an additional 44 around Mexico. The University of Arizona offered her a golf scholarship, and Ochoa accepted it to team up with a fellow golfer Natalie Gulbis.
Lorena won the NCAA Player of the Year Award in both 2001 and 2002, but failed to win the championship, and then she left the college to become a professional. Ochoa was named the LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2003 following eight top ten finishes, while her first LPGA win came in May 2004 when she beat Wendy Ward at the Franklin American Mortgage Championship. Two more wins followed by the end of 2004 and in 2005, but in 2006, Ochoa emerged as one of the best golfers in the world, winning six titles and the LPGA Tour Player of the Year award. Lorena repeated that success in 2007, 2008, and 2009, winning 17 titles in the process. Additionally, Ochoa won two LPGA Tour major championships – at the Ricoh Women’s British Open against Maria Hjorth and Jee Young Lee in August 2007, and at the Kraft Nabisco Championship against Suzann Pettersen and Annika Sörenstam in April 2008. Between 2006 and 2008, Ochoa was also the LPGA Tour Money Winner, and these few seasons helped her to increase her net worth significantly. In April 2010, Ochoa announced her retirement from professional golf, saying that her last tournament would be the 2010 Tres Marias Championship. She has played a limited number of invitational events since, but has firmly declared that her interest is now in other areas.
