Video shows the moment a fleeing suspect on a moped crashes into the side of a police cruiser in Queens, causing it to burst into flames.
Police say the suspect was the only one injured and suffered minor injuries.
Police video reveals the dramatic moment officers arrive at the intersection of Merrick Boulevard and Liberty Avenue in Jamaica, blocking the path of a fleeing suspect on a moped.
He then sees the suspicious T-bone at the driver’s side door of the NYPD cruiser. He is thrown from the moped and it explodes into flames.
Neighbors in the area were surprised when CBS2’s Thalia Pérez showed them the video, but they say she’s not surprised because crime is out of control.

“I work in the area, but I always leave at 7 because later at night the situation in this area is very complicated,” said Juan de Jesús.

Police say the crash happened just before 12:30 a.m. Friday, and the driver of the moped was wanted in connection with the shooting that was fired just minutes away near 186th Street and Jamaica Avenue.
“ShotSpotter is pretty accurate. It pinpoints where the shots were fired from. It probably provides good probable cause for police officers to determine who the shooter was. I mean, it shows. They showed up at the scene. ShotSpotter identified where the shots were fired … they were being fired,” said Professor Michael Alcazar, a retired NYPD detective who spent more than 30 years with the department.
In this case, Alcazar says ShotSpotter proved to be an invaluable tool for law enforcement.
“Luckily no one else got hurt because he is driving recklessly with no regard for the cops, any civilians who could possibly have been crossing in the street or crosswalk. I think he’s just trying to get around that sector,” he said.
Arrested and Charged
Police say Love Olatunji-Ojo, 34, injured her wrist and suffered minor bruises and burns. He was arrested and faces multiple charges.
