Who is Lucy Letby?

Det Insp Hughes said the investigation was “extremely challenging” and the parents of all the babies were kept fully up to date.

Following Letby’s most recent re-arrest, Hughes said: “It has been more than three years since we first launched an investigation into a series of non-fatal infant deaths and collapses in the neonatal unit at The Countess of Chester Hospital.

“In that time, a dedicated team of detectives has been working extremely hard on this highly complex and highly sensitive case, doing everything possible as quickly as possible to identify what has led to these infant deaths and collapses.

“In July 2018, a female healthcare professional was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six babies at The Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal unit. She was subsequently released on bail. bail pending further investigation.

“In June 2019, the health professional was arrested again on suspicion of murder in connection with the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six babies. She was also arrested in connection with the attempted murder of three other babies.

On 11 November 2020, the Crown Prosecution Service authorized Cheshire Police to charge Lucy Letby with murder in connection with an ongoing investigation into several infant deaths at Countess of Chester Hospital.

Why was an investigation launched?

Police launched an investigation into the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital in May 2017.

The hospital board itself sounded the alarm after the high number of fatalities between March 2015 and July 2016.

The infant mortality rate in the hospital exceeded 10% of the average mortality rate in maternity wards.
