Who is Meredith Miller ?
A University of Utah student was arrested Wednesday after she allegedly threatened to detonate a nuclear reactor kept inside one of the campus’s science buildings if the school’s football team didn’t win its game last week.
The 21-year-old suspect, identified as Meredith Miller, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday for the alleged offense, charged with making a terrorism threat.
The bizarre bomb threat came before the No. 13 Utes’ home game against San Diego State on Saturday, where Utah was a heavy -2000 favorite.
However, Miller still seemed wary that her team couldn’t take home a win and she decided to take matters into her own hands, albeit ill-advisedly.
According to police, on the eve of the game, Miller “posted threats of violence” on Yik Yak, a community billboard app where users anonymously interact with others within a 5-mile radius.
Those threats, police said, prompted the student to claim that she “would detonate the nuclear reactor at the University of Utah causing massive destruction.”

What’s more, Utah would go on to decisively win the game, defeating the Aztecs 35-7, which makes Miller’s ill-advised insurance policy now seem a bit far-fetched.

However, in announcing the arrest Wednesday, police said the student had knowledge of the nuclear reactor, saying in a statement that Miller was “aware of where the reactor is and attends classes in the same building as the nuclear reactor.” reactor”.
Miller has since maintained the post was a joke, to which the school responded Thursday in a statement saying that despite it being a joke, the school has “a zero tolerance policy for these types of threats.”

Meanwhile, Miller has been charged with a second-degree felony as a result of her actions, which could carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in state prison and a minimum of one.
The reactor in question is located in the university’s Merrill Engineering Building, where it is used for teaching and research purposes.
Even though it emits nuclear power, radiation levels from the device, which was built in 1975, are carefully controlled and low enough that it’s not dangerous to stand near the reactor, the professors say.
