Rob is of Lithuanian ancestry. He went to Trinity High School, located in his hometown., where he played soccer, and also excelled in football and swimming. After his matriculation in 1996, Rob enrolled at Auburn University, where he played football for the Auburn Tigers until 1999, after which he transferred to Georgia Southern University and continued playing football for the Georgia Southern Eagles football team. While at Auburn, he was a semifinalist for Lou Groza Award in 1998, but then in 2000 while at Georgia Southern University, Rob won the 2000 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship, and then returned to Auburn to finish his studies, obtaining a degree in marketing.
Before his NFL career kicked off, Rob was in an off-season squad for the Green Bay Packers, but then joined he Charleston Swamp Foxes of the Arena Football League’s minor league system (AF2).

After that, he joined the Carolina Cobras for the 2004 season and completed 17 field goals out of 40, and then in 2005, he played for the New York Dragons, before eventually earning a place in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans the same year.
