Robin is the son of John and his wife Darlene Ventura, of part-Portuguese and Italian ancestry. He went to Righetti High School, located in Orcutt, California, where he started playing baseball. After matriculation he enrolled at Oklahoma State University, where he continued to play baseball, and left his mark at the university with the record of a 58-game hitting streak, having begun with 107 runs and 96 RBI in his freshman year. Thanks to his successful plays, he was rewarded with the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award, both in 1988.

Following his successful college career, Robin declared for the 1988 MLB Draft, and was selected as the 10th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox. Before making his MLB debut, Robin played at AA Birmingham for a major part of the 1989 season, before being brought into the Chicago White Sox major league squad. He didn’t have much success in his rookie season, making 25 errors among other negative statistics. Nevertheless, the following season he had one of his best with 100 runs batted in, setting the franchise record for RBI by a third baseman. His overall performance earned him his first Gold Glove Award, which he won again in 1992 and 1993. He played for the White Sox until the end of the 1998 season, when his contract expired. Before the end of the contract, Robin and White Sox’ front office had several contract disputes, and as a result he became a free agent.

He wasn’t long without engagement as the New York Mets picked him, up offering him a four-year contract which Robin accepted, and in the first season with his new team, had his career high in RBI with 120, 32 home runs, and .301 batting average, which earned him his fourth Gold Glove award. Robin played for the Mets until 2001 when he moved to the New York Yankees in a trade for David Justice, but spent only two seasons with the Yankees – in the first season with the Yankees, Robin posted 93 RBI, which was his eighth season to go over the 90 RBI mark. However, the next season saw him struggling to reach constant form, and as a result he was traded in 2003 to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He retired at the end of 2004 season, after an unsuccessful season with the Dodgers and nagging arthritis in his right ankle.

During his career, Robin had several notable games, including one in which he hit two grand slams.

Aside from successful team career, he played with the USA national team and won the gold medal in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

His arthritis continued to trouble him long after his retirement, and he had to undergo an ankle allograft in order to recover; for quite some time he walked with a cane.

His managerial career was nowhere near as successful as his playing career; it lasted only four years and in those four years, the White Sox finished the season with a negative score, forcing Robin to resign.

He also tried himself as a color commentator, and was appointed for the College World Series, while during 2010, he worked for the Little League Southwest Region Finals on ESPN as a color commentator with Carter Blackburn.

Regarding his personal life, Robin has been married to Stephanie Hebard since 1990; the couple has four children together.
