Who is Shanynthia Gardner?
A Tennessee woman convicted of stabbing her four children to death was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday after a judge rejected her insanity plea.
Criminal Court Judge James Lammey Jr. sentenced Shanynthia Gardner, 34, to life in prison with the possibility of parole Tuesday for the 2016 murders of her 4-, 3-, 2- and 5-month-old children.
All had stab wounds to the neck and were pronounced dead at the scene, ABC 24 reports.
Another boy, who was 7 years old at the time, ran away to a neighbor’s house looking for help, the Shelby County district attorney’s office said.
Gardner, who had worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at the time, admitted to the fatal stabbings while she was talking to her husband on the phone, according to FOX 13 Memphis.
Prosecutors
His lawyers argued an insanity defense, but the judge rejected it. Prosecutors agreed that he is mentally ill but said he understood the wrongfulness of his actions, the district attorney’s office said.

Eric Christensen of the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office told Law and Crime that life in prison was the maximum sentence Gardner could face since the state was not seeking the death penalty.
He added that the prosecution reached a conviction with Gardner’s defense attorney after her conviction in December.
“I think it’s a fair sentence,” he said. “I want to say that we had four victims that were brutally stabbed and killed, so I think it represents justice for those little babies.
“It was important to us to get justice for Martin Gardner and his four beautiful children Tallen, Sya, Sahvi and Yahzi,” he continued, saying, “We returned a photo album [to Martin] that was taken as evidence.”
“He was very excited and said that was all he had left, but he was glad she couldn’t hurt any more kids.”
