Sheila Correll Biography
Who is Sheila Correll ?
A retired law secretary whose energy bills have nearly tripled despite spending the winter without her gas heating said Boris Johnson should have to live on his state pension of £182 a week for a year.
Sheila Correll, 79, who lives in a one-bedroom terraced house in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, has criticized the government, saying it is “disgusting” and made up of “millionaires who have no clue”.
She has asked for the state pension to be increased by at least £100 a week and described how he had just received a gas and electricity bill; which has risen from £38 to £96 per month.
Ms Correll told the Pennsylvania News Agency that she now has to watch every penny she spends on food as her only income is her state pension of £182 a week.
She also described that she was unable to rely on the heater to keep warm last winter.
She said: ‘Last winter was horrible. I just had my little wood stove on for a few hours a day at night.
‘And the rest of the time…basically, because I’m fit, I was running, I could warm up running. But many older people can’t. And they depend on heat to stay alive, basically.
‘It was horrible. It was January and February. You just have to put on a lot of clothes.
And, like I said, you keep yourself stimulated. Stay out of the house as much as you can.
“When you’re getting cases of people riding buses to stay warm in the winter, it’s diabolical.”
Ms. Correll also explained that she can’t indulge in anything and sticks only to what she needs.
She added: ‘You can’t afford to give yourself anything. It’s basic all the time.
‘And even buying the basics is a nightmare. You have to go from store to store, check the prices, you have to have a miniature computer in your head to figure it all out. It’s a nightmare.

An elderly woman’s heartbreaking confession as she details the…
My pension is £182 a week. From that you have to pay all your food bills, everything related to the house, what do you have left over?’
She also said: ‘Everything has been duplicated. It doesn’t matter what you’re looking for. Even dog biscuits have doubled in price. It’s a nightmare. Everything has risen far beyond what we can afford.
‘If I want clothes or something like that, I go to charity shops. That’s all he can do, he can’t afford the prices now,” added Ms Correll. ‘On June 7 I will be 80 years old. I can’t afford to treat myself for a special occasion.’
Ms Correll said the Government should increase pensions by at least £100 a week so retirees can cope with the cost of living crisis, but she was not confident this would happen.
She said: ‘This government doesn’t care about the elderly at all. We’re just a carbuncle on the tip of his nose. We’re just a nuisance.
When asked about situations where people have to choose between heating and eating, he said: “Soon, it will be both.” To be honest, you won’t be able to do either.
She said: ‘We worked all our lives for this money and it was always with the promise that they would take care of it, in her old age she would have a decent pension to live on’.
‘We have? Do we have hell. It’s just another lie.
Mrs Correll was born in Suffolk but she lived all over the world before settling in Horncastle some five years ago. Her husband died in the 1980s and she retired about 10 years ago.
She lives alone with her border collie, Ben, her two cats, Alfie and Pixie, and her parrot, Monty.
A former county champion and marathoner, Ms. Correll said she still runs 40 to 50 miles a week.
