Who is Susan Sarandon ?

Actress Susan Sarandon has apologized for a social media comment about the slain NYPD officer’s funeral where she compared it to “fascism” and called the event “insensitive.”

Sarandon, 75, posted a tweet about Officer Jason Rivera’s funeral after he was shot to death in East Harlem on January 21.

Rivera Death

Rivera and her partner Wilbert Mora were shot to death after answering a domestic call involving a mother and her son.

The Oscar-winning actress tweeted a photo of Rivera’s casket as she was transported through the streets of New York with the caption: “I’m going to tell my children that this is fascism.”

She also added: ‘So if all these cops weren’t needed for CRIME that day, doesn’t that mean they won’t be needed on ANY day?’

The hashtag #abolishthepolice was also in the post.

Sarandon apologized for her on Friday after receiving criticism for her comments.

“I am deeply sorry for the meme I recently shared on Twitter that included a funeral photo for Officer Jason Rivera,” she said in the post.

I quickly reacted to the image without relating it to a police funeral and now realize how insensitive and deeply disrespectful it was to make that point at the time.

“I sincerely apologize to the family of Officers Rivera and Mora for causing additional pain during their bereavement.”

Sarandon received a significant amount of backlash on social media

Sarandon received a significant amount of backlash on social media after making the controversial post.

“People who say ‘cops don’t prevent crime’ have to be some of the most naive people ever,” @stevesbromike wrote. “Every city that has defunded its police has seen a sharp increase in almost all crime. If you don’t think that’s correlated, you’re literally stupid.”

‘Honestly, what’s wrong with you? Do you have any idea what a nightmare New York is right now? New Yorkers are terrified of rising crime, all because people like you think abolishing the police would solve anything,” another user wrote.

“It’s the logic of a three-year-old,” another user wrote. I suggest you do police duty for a year and then let’s see how fascist you think they are. Police officers protect young children, rescue those in distress and are vulnerable everywhere. All he does is talk for a living.

The actress, who lived in the Chelsea neighborhood

The actress, who lived in the Chelsea neighborhood for three decades until 2020, has historically been critical of the NYPD. After selling her sprawling antebellum duplex for $7.9 million, the actress told the Wall Street Journal that she intended to stay in the neighborhood and remain a New Yorker forever.

In July of this year, Sarandon joined a rally outside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s office calling for ‘Medicare for All,’ saying she and her fellow leftists are ‘losing hope’ in the progressive lawmaker through a megaphone. and calling for better leadership from ‘The Squad.’

In 2018, Sarandon was arrested along with 575 other protesters during a demonstration outside the US Senate building against a Trump-era policy separating migrant children from their parents at the border.

Nearly a decade earlier, she was arrested in March 1999 outside One Police Plaza after joining a weeks-long protest after Amadou Diallo, an unarmed street vendor, was shot and killed by NYPD officers in the Bronx.

The Thelma and Louise star continued

However, the 71-year-old Academy Award winner admitted that her strong views came at a price: being ostracized from people in the industry and even receiving death threats.

“Things I regret are just things I didn’t say or do, even though I went through a pretty scary time before Iraq, and certainly by not supporting Hillary Clinton, I ended up getting a tremendous amount of criticism about that. .

The Thelma and Louise star continued, “I just know that for all the nasty or hurtful things or scary things that happened because of an unpopular position with the war or whatever, I don’t regret it.”

In 2017, Sarandon announced that she was glad Hillary Clinton lost the election because she is “so dangerous” and the United States would be “at war.”

When former Mayor de Blasio praised the NYPD for their “overall tremendous restraint” during the George Floyd protests, Sarandon tweeted “shame on you.” Ultimately, the city’s Department of Investigation later criticized police officers for their excessive use of force during several 2020 protests, and de Blasio apologized.

Sarandon isn’t the first person to receive backlash for his complaints about funerals: Coney Island Prep math teacher Christopher Flanigan was fired after posting a photo of the mass of officers, saying they were in the “conditions ideal for reciprocity”. officers who lashed out at George Floyd protesters in 2020.

New York City actress Jacqueline Guzmán

Flanigan captioned the now-deleted photo on his Instagram story: ‘5/30/20: NYPD SUV drives into crowd of protesters. Ideal conditions for reciprocity’, according to the New York Post.

The now-sacked teacher said his comment was ‘misunderstood’.

“I was really just trying to show the vulnerability of all these cops being in the same place at the same time, which seems like a dangerous situation to anyone who’s gathered together,” Flanigan told the Post on Sunday.

New York City actress Jacqueline Guzmán was fired from the theater company Face to Face Films after ranting about street closures during Rivera’s funeral.

In a now-deleted TikTok, Guzmán analyzes street traffic and shows police cars and ambulances blocking the streets.

Statement

“We don’t need to shut down most of Lower Manhattan because a cop probably died from doing his job wrong,” he says in the video.

“They kill people under the age of 22 every day for no good reason and we didn’t shut the city down on them, so.”

His own company released a statement, calling Guzman’s video “insensitive” and not “forgiving” of “his comments about the fallen officer Rivera.”

Although Guzman’s post sparked an incredible amount of anger, some Twitter users still complained about the traffic caused by Mora’s funeral procession.

“Downtown traffic is crazy today due to NYPD officer’s funeral,” he @adammc123 wrote. ‘Cars are flying through intersections at red lights. I almost got hit twice and yelled at the drivers. A guy on Broadway was having a MELTDOWN on a truck blocking the intersection. I do not blame him!
