Who is Todd Rokita?
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has vowed to launch an investigation into the doctor who gave an abortion to a 10-year-old girl from Ohio who was unable to get one in her own state after she was allegedly raped by an illegal immigrant.
Rokita appeared on Fox News on Wednesday, where he called Indiana OB/GYN Dr. Caitlin Bernard an “abortion activist who acts like a doctor” and, according to him, has a history of not reporting abortions.
Bernard performed an abortion on the unidentified 10-year-old rape victim whose story made headlines when she was forced to travel from her home state to Indiana due to Ohio’s six-week ban.
Rokita said that she is conducting an investigation into the doctor and her license.
“We’re gathering the evidence as we speak, and we’re going to fight this to the end, including reviewing her license if she didn’t show up,” she said. “And in Indiana it’s a crime … to intentionally fail to report.”
The case made headlines after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, and has come under scrutiny, but some doubted whether or not the story was true.
But this week, a 27-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, was arrested after confessing to raping the girl on two separate occasions.
Gerson Fuentes was arraigned Wednesday in Columbus, where he faces a felony charge of first-degree rape of a child under the age of 13. Bail was set at $2 million.
Investigation
On Wednesday, Fox News host Jesse Watters took credit for “pressing” the investigation into the rape of a 10-year-old Ohio girl, just two days after suggesting the story might be a hoax.
Watters hinted that the criminal investigation that led to Fuentes’ arrest was largely the result of his comment Monday.
“Primetime covered this story heavily on Monday, pushed and now we’re glad that justice is being done,” he said.
The network then played a compilation of short videos showing Watters teasing out inconsistencies in the case, including why Dr. Bernard, who provided the abortion services in Indiana, had not reported the rape.

Dr. Bernard has not yet responded to the AG’s comments, but he did tweet on Wednesday:
‘My heart breaks for all survivors of s*xual assault and abuse. I am so sad that our country is failing you when you need us most. Physicians must be able to give people the health care they need, when and where they need it.’
Charged and Arrest
Gerson Fuentes, 27, was arrested on July 12 and has been charged with one count of rape after police said he confessed to raping the girl on two separate occasions.
Watters criticized the media’s focus on the abortion aspect of the highly covered story and denounced the fact that a criminal investigation into the rape had not been opened when it made national headlines.
“Why is no one talking about bringing the child rapist to justice?” Watters said. “If there is a…child molester on the streets of Ohio, they need to be brought to justice, and if so-called doctors are covering up child rape, they need to be prosecuted.”
Watters has cast doubt on the veracity of the story, venturing to suggest that it could be a hoax used by the left to exploit the potential to politicize the victim 10 years after the Roe v. Wade.
‘But what if this horrible story is not accurate and the abortion doctor and others are misleading us?’ Watters asked during Monday’s segment.
‘And the mainstream media and the President of the United States taking advantage of another hoax? So this is absolutely embarrassing. And it fits into a pretty dangerous pattern of politically timed disinformation.
Fuentes, who federal sources said is in the country illegally, has confessed to raping the girl at least twice, a police investigator testified at the arraignment.
The detective also testified that the victim in the case was forced to travel to Indiana for an abortion following the Dobbs ruling, a claim that Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, along with other conservatives, had called into question just days ago. .
A detective testified Wednesday that Columbus police learned of the girl’s pregnancy through a referral from Franklin County Children’s Services made by her mother on June 22.
The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that recognized women’s constitutional right to abortion, just two days later, on June 24.
