Who is Valerie Meza-Faublack ?

Miami police accuse two women of scamming potential tenants out of thousands of dollars for a Little Havana apartment they never lived in.

According to an arrest report, the victims realized they were scammed after they all showed up at the same time to get their keys.

In the report, a detective said one of the victims had seen an ad in Diario Las Americas, a Spanish-language newspaper, for a one-bedroom apartment at 1400 NW Third Street and called the number listed.

Victim

The report indicates that a woman named Hamanda responded and directed the victim to meet her on February 28 at an office on Southwest Eighth Street and bring $4,050 cash for the security deposit, plus the first and last month’s rent.

Hamanda allegedly told the man, who she was under the impression that she was a real estate agent, that she would receive the key the next day.

Police said that when the man arrived, Hamanda was not there, but two other victims were, and said that two women named Hamanda and Natalia had rented the same apartment from them.

The victims went to the Southwest Eighth Street office to try to see if they could locate the two women, police wrote. After hours of waiting, they realized that they had been scammed.

One of the victims had taken a photo with Hamanda, police wrote. Hamanda and Natalia were later chosen from a police lineup.

It turns out that “Hamanda” was actually Valerie Meza-Faublack, 21, an unemployed Venezuelan citizen residing in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood, according to the report.

Police wrote that “Natalia” was actually 19-year-old Alejandra Martínez-González.

Arrested

Meza-Faublack was arrested after meeting with detectives at Miami police headquarters on Wednesday. She faces charges of grand theft in the third degree, organized scheme to defraud and acting as an unlicensed real estate broker, all felonies.

According to the police report, Martínez-González was still at large at the time of Meza-Faublack’s arrest.
