Type of music
Throughout his career, Morgan has been outspoken against the “queer rap” genre, which was shaped by Pitchfork and other publications that rank Zebra Katz and artists like Mykki Blanco and Le1f. While Morgan says that without his sexuality he would generally be classified as a “rapper”, Morgan claims that the inherently homophobic gender is a typecasting for musicians. In this sense, his music was classified as contrary to the genre.
Ima read
Although he doesn’t have a strong personal relationship with fashion, Morgan says the movement was forced to provide a context for “Ima Read.” The connection between fashion and the runway was fueled by the 20th anniversary documentary of the ballroom scene Paris is Burning and the popularization of fashion in 2012. Morgan loves ballroom culture and fashion. He performed at the GMHC House of Latex Ball in 2012, supports House of Vogue founder DJ MikeQ, and is a founding member of House of Ladosha.
Less is moor
Inspired by James Baldwin, Grace Jones, Nina Simone, and Little Richard, Zebra Katz’s 2020 debut album Less Is Moor pays homage to the minimalist approach often demanded by artists of color. Morgan illustrates this by saying that, in general, non-white people are expected to be more resourceful than their white counterparts. With elements of hip-hop, drum ‘n’ bass, and electronic music, Less Is Moor aims to channel Katz’s biting lyrics into their biting beats.
The basis for the album Less Is Moor emerged when Morgan was studying at the New School’s Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. His thesis project “Moor Contradictions” was a rendition of monologues and raps, including “Ima Read,” by various personalities created by Morgan. One such character is Zebra Katz, whom Morgan says she was born to as a result of her obsession with identity thesis. Since then, Morgan has battled the various boxes and pigeonholes created by his peers.
The album title is inspired by the moors.
