Who was Arthur Haines ?

A man has been arrested for the murder of a teenage boy in a cold case at a house fire more than two decades ago in a cold case breakthrough.

Homicide detectives arrested a 55-year-old man in Queensland on Wednesday for the suspected murder of Redfern teenager Arthur Haines on April 9, 1998.

Haines, 13, was staying at a friend’s house in Waterloo, Sydney, when a fire swept through the house around 10:30 p.m. m.

Investigation

The fire was caused by a Molotov cocktail thrown at the building; however, the case stumped detectives for decades until the investigation was reopened in 2020.

Arthur had been sleeping in a room on the top floor of the house on Walker Street when the house burst into flames.

He had to run through the fire to escape, suffered burns to 60 percent of his body, and died at Westmead Children’s Hospital some 11 weeks later.

Six others in the house escaped the building unharmed.

After lengthy investigations and public requests for information, Homicide Squad detectives recently received an arrest warrant for the 55-year-old man.

The man was arrested around 11 a.m. Wednesday by detectives from the Queensland Police Service Homicide Investigation Unit at a Brisbane home.

NSW Police detectives have since traveled to Queensland, where they will seek the man’s extradition to NSW at Brisbane Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
